Background

Timothy is a British travel goods brand that has arrived on the scene with a flagship store in London’s Jermyn Street. Timothy has a range of products from check-in cases to travel accessories. Business Traveller worked with the company a few years ago to produce a branded case for readers. We wanted to be one of the first to put its Burlington Cabin Case to the test.

The product

The first thing I noticed was the weight. It seemed very light at 3.8kg compared to similar suitcases I had used before. Mine was in black and made from polycarbonate but there are also titanium and white versions, plus some with a leather trim and carbon fibre parts.

As a cabin bag, I liked the front ‘bonnet’, which allows for easy and quick access to a front compartment – great for the speedy removal of items at security. There is a laptop pocket here as well as other pockets to store documents and passports, plus a floating divider between this space and the main case area. This meant I could create more space here (but less inside the main area) for my cables, chargers, papers etc, but also the liquids I needed to remove.

The front bonnet means you will rarely need to open the main case area until your destination. When you do, you will find each half is accessed via a zipped divider to hold all items in place.

Travelling through the airport with the case was easy. It ran smoothly over both carpet and tiles and the multi-position handle let me choose the exact height that suited me. Timothy claims to use patented ‘silent wheels’ with silicone dampers to reduce noise and vibration. I didn’t have another case in the other hand to compare, but the wheels did work well!

While physical security is not as much of an issue for a cabin bag, should you need to check it, this case does come with double-coil zips and TSA-approved key and combination lock. For peace of mind there is a lifetime defect/workmanship guarantee.

Verdict

This is a well-considered, comfortable and stylish bag that’s clearly been designed for frequent travellers.
