Plans unveiled for Al Maktoum airport expansion

Al Maktoum International airport has announced plans for the expansion of services at within the passenger terminal building, as the facility aims to handle up to 26.5 million passengers per year by 2025.

The first phase of the project – slated for completion by June 2017 – will see the terminal increase in size from 66,107sqm to 145,926sqm.

The arrivals section of the building will see a new immigration hall added with 55 counters, while the departures building will benefit from an additional 64 check-in counters, with ten counters dedicated to business class check-in.

A total of 12 new boarding lounges will also be added, as well as a new baggage screening area for arrivals, and the transfer, security and baggage reclaim areas will be expanded.

The airport is located with the Dubai World Central project, and is currently mainly used by budget, cargo and charter services.

Subsequent expansion plans are expected to increase capacity at Al Maktoum to 26.5 million passengers per year by 2025, and the airport will ultimately be able to handle over 220 million passengers.

Al Maktoum is situated around 40km from the city’s main Dubai International airport, which is currently the world’s busiest airport by international passenger traffic.
